An account of our stay in Amsterdam in January 2015

by Juan Cano and Sergi Hernández
On Saturday 10th of January, we, a group of students at IES Infanta Isabel d’Aragó that were working on the GEO Future project went to Amsterdam. Although our flight arrived with some delay, we were in the houses of our Dutch partners in the afternoon.  When we left our suitcases, we visited the centre of the city.

On Sunday, all the classmates and our partners met to go by boat along the canals. Then, we had lunch and we went for a walk visiting all the important monuments and famous places of the city, like the Rijksmuseum, the Vondelpark, Anne Frank’s house and we even did some ice-skating. We had a great time.

The following day, we were shown the Dutch school, the Vossius Gymnasium, and we heard a speech about energy and sustainability that was quite interesting. At midday, we visited the Shell facilities in Amsterdam, where we had lunch while we were listening to another speech on their sustainability projects. After that, we checked in at the Vondelpark Stayokay Hostel.

On Tuesday 13th, we had lunch with our partners at the school canteen and then, we went to the other side of the river to visit the amazing 3D Canal House. There, we learnt how a 3D printer works, and we could see them functioning. The staff at the 3D Canal House were building a whole house made only by these printers. After that, we returned to the hotel to have dinner.

On Wednesday 14th, we had breakfast in the hotel and then we took a bus that brought us to Zeeland, south of the Netherlands. The bus dropped us off at the country house where we were going to stay. There, we were given some bikes in order to go on a cycling tour and visit the sunken village of Koudekerke, the Oosterschelde storm barrier and the dunes. It was an enjoyable trip. In the evening, after we had had dinner, we heard a presentation about the geological and geographical importance of Zeeland and about Rotterdam as a Smartcity.

On Thursday 15th, we left the country house and went to Rotterdam, an amazing city with an enormous port and lots of modern buildings.  Once there, we walked the city to see some examples of its architecture. After that, we went back to the Stayokay hostel,  located in the centre of Rotterdam in the striking Cube Houses.  In the afternoon, we went shopping and we visited the wonderful market hall.

On the last day, which was Friday 16th, we woke up at the Stayokay hostel and we went back to Amsterdam, where we had pizza in a classroom at the Vossius Gymnasium  together with our Dutch partners. It was delicious! Once we had had lunch, we took a train to go to Schipol airport. The plane took off at half past six and when we arrived in Barcelona, our parents and friends were waiting for us.
